Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)

For some people there is an increase in vertical banding or horizontal creases in the skin of the neck as they get older. This often causes the development of a “turkey neck,” “turkey wattle” or a double chin. Most people assign blame to drooping skin, but the problem is actually coming from a drooping muscle called the platysma which runs along the front of the neck under the skin. This muscle is what we use when we grimace or strain.

Sagging of the neck may be due to age but may also be a result of significant weight loss or extended exposure to the sun, or simple heredity. Dr. Farias addresses sagging necks through a surgical procedure designed to tighten the platysma muscle. Using a small incision underneath the chin, he removes excess fat and uses permanent sutures to bring the platysma muscle back together.

Platysmaplasty is often performed in conjunction with a facelift, although it may also be a stand-alone procedure.
